Your Ben's Stories

We need your Best Ben's Story!

Brand New Stories from Ben's Chili Bowl 2010!

We've lived in the area for 20 years and Ben's had been on our list of places to visit. We decided to go on Saturday, January 10, 2009. Our timing couldn't have been more perfect. As we approached the restaurant, we noticed what looked like secret service vehicles on the street - not in itself an oddity in Washington, DC. We parked a block away and walked back to Ben's. The doors were locked as soon as we entered and found seats at the front counter. Secret Service guys started searching everyone but no one knew why. Then, the door opened and in walked Barack Obama to the squeals and shrieks of every diner and employee inside! We all stood and gave him a standing ovation. He walked through the crowd, shaking every hand and posing for every picture. We introduced ourselves and shook his hand. He was with Mayor Fenty. Obama ordered his lunch and sat at the table directly behind us -- putting us squarely in view of every photograph taken by every photographer who seemed to appear out of nowhere. When (then) President-elect Obama asked for cheese for his half-smoke, my husband was the one who recommended "shredded cheddar" and handed the cup of cheese directly to Obama earning him the title of "Presidential Cheese Advisor!" We were on the front page of the Washington Post and in newspapers and on newscasts around the world. Many of our friends and family saw the coverage and contacted us to share in this once in a lifetime event. I took pictures of Barack Obama with the employees of Ben's Chili Bowl and personally delivered them a few weeks later. Our long-awaited chili dogs and half-smokes? Awesome! The desserts...divine.

My wife and I, visited the first time,in early fall of 2009. Absoultely loved it!! So, my family came up from SC and my brother being the biggest Anthony Bourdain fan, seen the episode of DC and Bens Chili. My Mom and Dad raved about it afterwards and the whole ride back to Indian Head, MD. My brother was amazed at the fact of being in such a historic and famous establishment, so we talked about giving our own evaluation, A++++. So i passed on the new tradiation of being at BENS for Christmas!!! Thanks

The death of Ben Ali is indeed sad for the passing of a good man, but his passing also reminds that even those of us who are relatively new to DC can find the District's common ground at the Chili Bowl.  Race is a powerful force and it more often than not divides us from one another.  But at the humble, never-changing Chili Bowl, people of all colors, race and creeds come together in the harmony of eating and the celebration of the African American community and leaders of Washington.  As an old white guy from South Georgia, I count my visits to Ben's among the, fortunately, growing number of occasions when all of us can be one, even that means we are all up to our ears in chili.

I was introduced to your father today in the glorious celebration that took place at the Lincoln Theater. Clearly, he lived life to the fullest in every aspect of his world, from work to travel to family to contributing to the community. The stories shared--especially those from you and your two brothers--were funny, poignant and insightful. And I loved hearing his voice and words in the video at the end.
I couldn't help feeling though, as I sat there, that I had already knew him through your acts of generosity as a Teaching for Change board member and friend. Your ability to run a highly successful business and at the same time, devote time and energy to promoting social justice not only locally but nationally through our organization is inspirational. Of particular significance to me was when you stopped by to support us years ago at a Bruce-Monroe ES parent rally to demand DCPS officials keep their promises to DCPS families.(Thanks to those early protests, the Bruce-Monroe community is now getting a new school.) While your presence at board meetings I know was important, it was your presence at that rally that demonstrated to me your alliance with those who live in the neighborhood.
So for me, today was not only a celebration of your father, but of his legacy that you carry so well.
How grateful our community is to have the Ali family!
Blessings on all of you.

Over time, I have discovered the secret recipe of Ben's Chili Bowl, and it's easy to remember and it’s only nine words:

1) All are welcome
2) All are equal
3) All have dignity

It's a recipe everybody can take home, and it's good to teach the children.

My 10 year-old daughter heard about Ben's on the radio news after Mayor Fenty and Barack Obama visited. She reminded me of it when we had a day off. We came on the metro with my wife who is in a big electric wheelchair. Sometimes she finds it difficult to maneuver through tightly arranged restaurants and doesn't always feel welcome, but . . .
As we came up on the sidewalk, a Ben's employee saw us coming, jumped out to get the door, and called inside for the patrons to 'tighten up' so we could get in.
We made it through to a table with no trouble. The counterman took my order at the counter, but told me to go on back and he'd bring our food and the check. The food was great, the service was outstanding and I wish every visitor to DC would stop at Ben's Chili Bowl. You and your staff represent DC and its community better than any place I've been. Thanks for a great experience and see you again soon.

What is your Ben's Story?:
I went in of Ben's Chili Bowl and ask for the owner and after meetng Mrs. V.
Ali se ask if, "I could repaint her window to match the name and paint on the other part of the window facing U St.?" I told and quher," I could and quoted her a fair price." After I completeted the job on the spot, she was pleased with my work. When she saw my invoice sheet "Skivvy Works" she ask me if," I could print T-shirts for her employees?" I said,"yes". I also printed shirts for her son's ice cream shop in the at the time "new Reeves Municipal Center"-silk screening was the technique I used in those days. We enjoyed many years of what I'd like to term as a "good business relationship and the meeting of a new friend that was also an entrepreneur providing a service and jobs with in our community. This will always be a memorable experience in my mind that I had with the Ben Ali family in their quest to help make a change for the better in the DC business and civci community. Skivvy Works is also proud to be part of that struggle to make our community a better place for all.

One day I was watching the travel channel's "Samantha Brown's Great Weekends" and Washington D.C was the city she was exploring. I've lived 40 minutes away from D.C my entire life and have never heard of this yummy historic secret. She was eating here and ordered the chili half-smoke and chili-cheese fries and to top it all off ,she washed it down with a shake!   Ever since I saw the show, I promised myself to take my taste buds on a field day and treat them to the districts famous chili half-smoke. One day, my cousin and I had to take care of some business in D.C so I was determined to find "Ben's Chili Bowl".  After a rainy afternoon, a couple of wrong turns, we finally found it. There was about 30 people in line but I was determined to wait it out. After standing in line for only about 5 minutes, I ordered the famous chili half-smoke, chili cheese fries and a chocolate shake! DELICIOUS! The staff was exceptional and I was even helped by the guy that helped Samantha Brown on her show! I was so excited and the food was delicious! I left there feeling like a part of history and will  never forget my experience at "Bens Chili Bowl".

I don't know what I enjoyed more - the Chili Half-Smokes or all the historic pictures on the walls! Thanks for a GREAT experience!

While in DC on my 7th & 8th Grade class trip from Trinity Lutheran School in Darmstadt, IN, our tour guide took us to Ben's for lunch.  It just happened to be my 13th birthday.  They took us in the back room and told us the story about how Ben's got started and has lasted all these years.  They made a big deal about my birthday, and took a bunch of pictures of us.  It will definitely be the most memorable birthday of my life.  Our whole group had a great time and enjoyed the chili half smokes and cheese fries.  Hopefully my family and I will be able to go back some day while on vacation.

I'm a Native Washingtonian.
I was Born July 1957, One year after the Ali's created this incredibible restaurant.

I would go with my Moma to the salon and wait while My Aunt fixed her hair and while sitting patiently reading Jet and Ebony Magazine's, the highlight of the day was for me to go to Ben's Chili Bowl and get lunch for all the ladies who where getting there hair fixed and worked at the Hair Salon.
The Lincoln and Booker T theatre was also a highlight as a child and it makes me so proud to be a D.C. Native.
I go to Ben's now to get my favorite Combo, Half Smoke with the WORKS and Chili Cheese Fries!
I live in Maryland now but when I go and eat at Ben's , it's like coming back home!

My first trip to Ben's chili bowl was on Father's day 2003.  I was a student at American University, and my father was back in Connecticut.  One of my buddies was in a similar situation.

I had been in DC for about 3 years and heard all about the Bowl and wanted to experience it firsthand.  So, my friend and I had our fathers day dinner at Ben's Chili Bowl - one of my most memorable fathers days ever.

Our 2009 Stories Below

Mike and I went to DC for the first time July 1 through the 16th 2008.  I always research wherever we travel for special things to see and places to eat.  I stumbled upon the web site for Ben's and immediately placed it on my list of things I must do when in DC.  Boy am I glad I did.  We arrived in the late afternoon and wondered in unaware of what we would find.  We were amazed, not only was our food delicious but we were entertained by Maurice's fine singing while we ate.  The staff was so kind we felt right at home. Even though we were the only white couple in the place.  It was a wonderful experience and it only got better.  One of the sons came out, I'm so sorry I can't remember his name, but I do remember his smile. He sat and shared stories of Ben's with us and took us on a tour of all the wonderful photos in the restaurant.  It was the high light of my trip.  Just a week ago I had another highlight as I saw the movie that we had been told about on our visit.  We were told that Russell Crow was making a movie where he would come into Ben's.  Well I saw it and it was great.  The best part of course was Maurice (whose full name appeared in the credits, I wouldn't leave until I saw it) who served Mr. Crow with a smile.  I was so disappointed that he didn't sing though, it is a trademark of Ben's from what I understand and it surely was one of the highlights of my visit.  So I am coming back this July and you know Ben's is at the top of our list.  This time we hope to visit more than once just to enjoy the most wonderful, accepting and happy environment in DC.  Mike and I are seniors, although we feel and act like kids, so we know the value of family and Ben's has the atmosphere of family and caring throughout.  No one should miss Ben's when they travel to DC.  It is more historic and more fun than anything DC had to show off.  Thanks for a fantastic time.  Especially you Maurice, I'm coming for your autograph you star you!

I came to visit Ben's last week while on a business trip to DC where my business partner said that, before we left town, we HAD TO visit Ben's Chili Bowl.  Him and I, both being big chili fans, we made sure to stop in on our way driving back to Rochester, NY.  It had a very warm, inviting atmosphere right off the bat.  The gentleman at the counter was extremely hospitable and, when we asked what he recommended, he didn't skip a beat in suggesting the half-smoke right away.  His enthusiasm for the food and the restaurant were very refreshing, especially in these tough economic times where no one seems to be too happy to be at work.  I must say the food was outstanding and the various historic pictures on the wall were quite entertaining as well.  Ben's seems to be have a small but important place in Washington's history and we had heard about President Obama's recent visit so were excited to be a small part of that great history.  Ben's is quite centered around its rich African-American history but, being three white guys from New York, we were amazed at how welcoming and friendly everyone was there, cracking jokes and just having a great time serving food.  That's what it's all about everyone coming together to enjoy a tasty meal and even better company.  I am certainly going to spread the word about Ben's up here in Western NY and will surely visit again the next time I'm in your neck of the woods.  Ben's is certainly a model for all restaurants nationwide and I wish you great success for another 50 wonderful years.

Thankfully,

I had a few hours to kill after dropping my daughter off at a Blues Alley concert, so I decided to hop over to Ben's for a chili halfsmoke.  I'd only been there once before, and loved the atmosphere, the history and, of course, the food.

I got my food and went to sit down.  I wasn't in my seat more than 10 seconds when an elderly fellow in a leather jacket hurried over to the table.

"You know where you're sittin', boy?"

I looked at the little chrome and vinyl chair and the wonderful Formica table.

"No.  Where?"

"That's where Barack sat."

"Really?  Right here?

"Yessir."  He pointed to the chair on the other side of the table.  "And Fenty sat right there."

Before I was done, two other people, including a little kid who couldn't have been more than 10, breathlessly informed of the same fact.  It made my halfsmoke a little more perfect to realize that just a month earlier, Barack Obama's butt was in the same place as mine.

Makes me wonder about the other famous patrons.  Did Ella sit here?  The Duke?  Dr. King?

I think I need another half smoke.

I lived in DC last semester as an intern.  I ate twice at the chili bowl, with a half smoke both times.  I visited last month and took my friend to eat there also.  Before I left DC last December I made this poem and shared it with my friends the night we all ate there. Thought you might like it.

"Ben's Chili bowl is tonight
I'm so excited for the sight
Of brown, gooey chili on a hot dog bun
The taste of it is so much fun
An experience that's hard to top
It's definitely a must-see stop

So eat up and get your fill
Who knows where you'll get your next meal?
The food is sure to satisfy
Burgers, half-smoke, and chili cheese fry Down it goes and makes you smile But make sure there's a restroom in the next half mile... "

Sincerely,

Erin Roundy

I had the best lunch in the world there last Saturday. Service was awesome, food was great, atmosphere was the best ever. I bought a t-shirt. Alittle disappointed you didn't have any long sleeved ones. Maybe next time. Thanks for a great time.

We came to Ben's based on a recommendation from my brother who had been on a previous trip. We were worried that there would not be enough room for us all, we had a party of 9 and the front dining room was so busy but one of the employees greeted us and took us to the back room. There was pleny of seating and they showed a video with all the history of the restaurant. It was great fun! The food was wonderful and it was the best Chocolate Shake I have ever had! I will be back soon!

Our eighth graders were on a field trip to Washington D.C. on March 29th and had a bite to eat at your place. Our kids had a great time eating there. They had such high praise for their experience there.

Hopefully we can make this an annual spot in our trips to D.C. What a great place you have. Looking forward to seeing you all again next year about this time.
